THE GAME
by Kevin M Reese
CJ and TONI are sitting on the steps talking. BILLIE
enters, preoccupied.
CJ: (finishing up their conversation)...Oh, here comes Billie.
TONI: Hi Billie. Come here a minute.
BILLIE: Oh, hi. OK.
TONI: Did you see the game last night?
BILLIE: No, what game?
TONI: You're kidding! You don't even know what game?
BILLIE: No, I don't. Why? What game was last night?
CJ: Even I saw last night's game.
TONI: The playoffs. Man, I can't believe you didn't know it was the playoffs!
BILLIE: I don't follow sports. How would I know if I don't follow sports?
CJ: What do you mean you don't follow sports? Everybody follows sports.
BILLIE: I don't. So I guess not everybody follows sports.
TONI: Well, you sure did miss a great game. Chicago came back from behind and won the
whole thing. You should have seen it. It was just beautiful.
CJ: Yeah, it was great.
BILLIE: Yeah, well, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
TONI: What's that supposed to mean?
BILLIE: Nothing. I'm just glad you enjoyed it. The game--I'm glad you enjoyed the game.
TONI: Well, I did.
BILLIE: Good.
TONI: Yeah, ... good!
CJ: Geez, what's the matter, Billie?
TONI: Yeah, what's wrong.
BILLIE: Awww, I have to stay after school and wash the chalkboards in Mrs. Foster's room.
CJ: You have to do what??
TONI: Wash the chalkboard??
BILLIE: Yeah, I got in trouble, so she's making me wash her chalkboards.
CJ: What did you do? Did you kill somebody?
BILLIE: You'd think so the way she reacted. No, I threw a football at her.
CJ: You what?
BILLIE: Yeah, I threw her a football.
TONI: Oh, my gosh....
CJ: What were you doing throwing her a football? Were you outside?
BILLIE: No, it was inside, in class. Tommy was showing some of us his new football he got
last night for his birthday. She told him to put it away but he kept messing around with
it, so she told him to give it to her. I took the ball and threw it to her! I don't know
what I was doing.
CJ: That's funny! You threw Mrs. Foster a football!
TONI: Did she at least catch it?
They all laugh.
